This poster was created for V Con, the Vancouver S F and Fantasy Convention which I attended in October 2007 as the Artist Guest of Honour. The actual dragon himself has been around for awhile, since 1985 in fact when I was working on the cover for Guy Gavriel Kay's "The Wandering Fire". After working in inks for many years, I wanted to make a change and decided to try using acrylic paint. This portrait of a curious dragon was the result, my very first "real" painting. I had always wanted to find a use for him, and as the good folks at V Con liked the image I began to work up a composition that would fit his piercing gaze. As I am now comfortable in the digital realm, I was able to "knit" together, the dragon, the landscape and the girl on the horse to create the final image. As I didn't have time to paint the foreground figures, my daughter Miriam agreed to render them in gauche, which is like water colour only with white added. So this is our first printed collaboration.
